The Importance of a GIA Certificate: What is a GIA Graded Diamond?

Our signature Chrysella diamonds are a cut above the rest, and we use a variety of measures to ensure our diamonds are always at our recognizable high standard.

Complementary to our in-house services, we also employ an external accreditation service by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Used worldwide by jewelers to certify their diamonds and jewelry, this is known as a GIA grading report.

What is a GIA Diamond Grading Report?

The GIA diamond grading report is a certification service for diamonds and provides a highly detailed document for every gemstone assessed that includes precise detail regarding diamond quality and characteristics.

First and foremost, GIA stands for Gemological Institute of America and is the leading research body and grading laboratory for diamonds – not just in America but across the world. There are many other diamond-grading houses across the globe, but none as reputed as the GIA. Hence, why we (and other luxury jewelry businesses and diamond jewelers worldwide) recommend gemstones that have been measured using the GIA’s strict grading rules.

Having a natural diamond inspected and graded by the GIA laboratory means you can be confident that your diamond has been rigorously checked and correctly certified. The GIA’s report will grade your diamond based on the four C’s of diamond quality: clarity, color, cut and carat.

The detailed report also contains additional information such as the shape and cut of your diamond (for example, a round brilliant-cut), the grading of polish and symmetry, and details of any other notable characteristics or flaws. Your GIA report is meticulously detailed to give you an in-depth document to accurately describe all of your diamond’s features.

Each grading report includes a unique number, which will match the number inscribed on the girdle of your diamond (the tapered base). This inscription is so tiny that it is untraceable to the naked eye and only visible under extreme magnification.

If you’re shopping for a natural diamond for your diamond engagement ring, GIA certification offers assurance that your gemstone is natural or lab-grown from the detail on its certificate.

It’s also a guarantee that your diamond will not have had any artificial enhancements to adjust its color or clarity. GIA certification gives clarity and confidence when making your diamond purchase.

The Importance of a GIA Diamond Grade Report

The quality differences in diamonds can be so subtle that the best way to ensure your diamond has the quality or characteristics it claims to have, is with a thorough GIA report. The report leaves out no detail, so you know your diamond has been meticulously studied and documented.

Choosing a GIA-graded diamond also gives you an independent, unbiased verification of the quality of the diamond you are purchasing.

It provides assurance on the market value of your diamond; without a complete grading report, it’s difficult to evaluate the accurate price and allows you to compare it with other diamonds in your budget accurately.

A GIA report makes it easy to specify and compare color, cut, clarity and carat, making all the difference when deciding between diamonds.

GIA certification also confirms whether your diamond is natural or lab-grown and whether or not it has been treated or enhanced.

Why We Choose GIA Graded Diamonds

At Chrysella we pride ourselves in our partnership with GIA over the years, as our owner is a GIA Graduate Gemologist. We recognize GIA graded diamonds as the ultimate standard for the industry, as we favor their rigorous testing standards.

The GIA is a separate organization from commercial jewelry businesses and the sale of diamonds, so by using the GIA’s diamond laboratories, we ensure that we are operating in an impartial manner.

Grading our diamonds through the GIA ensures we use an external, scientifically accurate measuring system that will not inflate or exaggerate quality, grade too generously or omit details from a report.

Some jewelers may offer an in-house grading service; however, we do not adopt this practice to remain objective to the diamond grading process. Not only does this mean we are operating impartially, but you can shop with us knowing that we are using a reliable measuring system for our diamond grading and pricing.

GIA grading is also employed by some of the biggest diamond houses in the world (for example, Hope and De Beers). The GIA grading system and grading reports have historically been used to grade some of the most expensive diamonds in the world (notably the 273.85-carat De Beers Centenary Diamond and the 69.42-carat Taylor-Burton Diamond).

A diamond holding a GIA certification is instantly credible in the marketplace. At Chrysella, we primarily buy and sell diamonds that have been graded by the GIA, as we trust this measure of diamond grading to be unrivaled.

GIA Grading Reports for Natural Diamonds

If you buy a GIA graded diamond from Chrysella, we hand you your physical diamond report upon purchase as well as match your report number to the laser inscription on the diamond itself right in front of you.

Each report contains documentation for the four C’s of your diamond quality (cut, color, clarity and carat), along with unique characteristics, symmetry and polish. Each report will contain a unique number, matching the inscription on the girdle of the diamond.

GIA Grading Reports for Lab-Grown Diamonds

GIA certification is also available for laboratory-grown diamonds. Lab-grown diamond grading reports include similar report details around cut-color-clarity and carat, with the inscription on the girdle reading “laboratory grown.”

GIA Grading for Fancy Diamonds

Gia diamond grading isn’t limited to clear diamonds; it can also be carried out for fancy diamonds, along with a wide range of other gemstones.

If you’re looking for a uniquely colored diamond for your engagement ring, these rarer stones can also be graded by the GIA against the same characteristics that you would find for a clear diamond.
